6 - Redox Equilibria
CAPE CHEMISTRY UNIT 1 MODULE 3
KINETICS & EQUILIBRIA
OBJECTIVES
- Define the terms standard electrode (redox) potential and standard cell potential.
- Describe the standard hydrogen electrode.
- Describe methods used to measure the standard electrode potentials:
- metals or non - metals in contact with their ions in aqueous solutions
- ions of the same element in different oxidation states.
- Calculate standard cell potentials from standard electrode potentials of two half cells.
- Use standard electrode potentials of cells:
- to determine the direction of electron flow.
- to determine the feasibility of a reaction.
- Predict how the value of an electrode potential varies with concentration.
- Apply the principles of redox processes to energy storage devices.
