WHAT IS CAPE CHEMISTRY?

CAPE chemistry is an advance level exam for Caribbean students after they’ve completed their ‘O’ Level CSEC examinations. It is not a compulsory examination, but offers an introduction to higher learning before going to university. It is equivalent to the UK’s A-Level examination, and personally I feel the standard is higher (especially with the pure mathematics).

PURPOSE OF CXCCHEMISTRY.COM

This website provides chemistry revision notes and past papers with their solutions for Caribbean students pursuing unit one and unit two of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) chemistry course.

As a CAPE student I was disadvantaged in having resources and advice relating to the CAPE exams. The major problem with the CAPE chemistry unit one examination was actually doing the calculations. With regards to the theoretical aspects, you can use the Chemistry in context (which is widely available). Now I have access to a copy of Jim Clark’s chemistry calculations which I feel is tremendously helpful in getting the calculations sorted out.

I have, personally, developed as a chemistry student now that I’m at the University of Guyana, but having the predisposition to cape chemistry, I’m able to firmly grasp the concepts being taught in the lectures. What I find to be helpful is the excellent tutorial sessions done by the lectures, especially Mr. Orson La Rose (CHM 111, CHM 122, CHM 123 lecturer) and Mr. Raphael Singh (CHM 212 lecturer).

I have been fortunate to have really wonderful lecturers, and that they put up with all my questions! Smile I feel I ask too many, but how else will I learn? Very Happy

This semester is going to be hectic, It would be really wonderful if I had people interested in helping out with the site. If you are interested, my email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , please do feel free to contact me.

HIGHLIGHTS/CONTENT OF CXCCHEMISTRY.COM

  • CAPE chemistry revision notes
  • CAPE chemistry past papers (and their solutions)
  • CAPE chemistry experiments (videos) along with discussions.
  • CAPE chemistry practice multiple choice questions and other questions.

The site will continue to grow and hopefully provide a good archive of cape resources. I know people don’t like reading too much. Maybe I’ll put together some presentations with audio (but then DIALUP is the problem). I’ll see what I can do...

Please do keep coming regularly to check out the notes and other resources available because I will be updating them, making corrections and adding other stuff.

I’m a chemistry major @ University of Guyana – Berbice Campus, I want it to have all the things I’m interested, so don’t expect to find chemistry resources alone! Razz I’m interested in physics too (and I have some cape physics papers that I’ll upload).

SHOULD YOU DO CAPE CHEMISTRY?

If you want to do well @ university, then the answer is: definitely yes! If you want to get scholarships or get into overseas universities, then some of their requirements include CAPE subjects (as well as GCE AS/A2 exams among other specifications).  I haven’t regretted doing CAPE, because it is helping me so much in getting those A’s at UG! I’m extremely thankful that I was given the opportunity to have the exposure of a higher exam. A lot of schools in Guyana don’t do the CAPE or GCE exams, and the students going to university are having a tough time, because it seems that there is a large gap in the transition from CSEC to university.  People shouldn’t expect that they’ll get A’s because they have distinctions @ CSEC, you’ve got to work really hard and doing CAPE gives you a better opportunity in getting them with less stress.

We would like students to benefit from the resources of the website to do well in CAPE chemistry unit one, hence we have put together notes and practice questions for your convenience. It is vital that the experiences gained by doing the course is stuck with you and will be extremely helpful as you pursue university courses such as UWI, UG and other colleges/universities.

CAPE Chemistry allows you to have exemptions at various universities around the world, most notably UWI, UG, a majority of Canadian Universities (including York and McGill), even American universities (CXC recently signed articulation agreements with colleges in the US), and European Universities (such as Cambridge and Liverpool). The benefits of pursuing the CAPE chemistry course are enormous and it'll be helpful in your University life and by extension your career as well.

As a past candidate of CAPE Chemistry, i'm extremely grateful for the knowledge gained, and I'm able to get As in my courses @ the University of Guyana.

PREREQUISITES OF THE CAPE CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS

Any person with a good grasp of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) chemistry and mathematics syllabuses, or equivalent, should be able to pursue the course of study defined by this syllabus. However, successful participation in the course of study will also depend on the possession of good verbal and written communication skills.

STRUCTURE OF THE CAPE CHEMISTRY SYLLABUS

CAPE Chemistry Unit One is expected to be covered in 150 hours, and consists of three Modules, each requiring approximately 50 contact hours. This unit is structured as follows:

  • CAPE Chemistry Unit One (1) module one (1) – Fundamental of Chemistry
  • CAPE  Chemistry Unit One(1) module Two (2) – Kinetics & Equilibria
